Special Pesticide Registrations

The Montana Department of Agriculture can approve the use of pesticides for localized pest problems or emergency pest infestations. Section 24(c) of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) permits the Department to approve Special Local Need or Section 24(c) registrations for pesticides for pest problems that may be unique to Montana. Section 18 of FIFRA permits the Department to apply to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to permit the use of specific pesticides on an emergency basis through a short term exemption from federal pesticide registration.

Special pesticide registrations are initiated by Montana growers or grower associations in a cooperation with Department, specialists in pesticides and pest management, and pesticide registrants. Applicants should refer to Montana's Section 18 guidelines and 24(c) guidelines to assure all applicable information is included with the application requests.
